The applications of values-based leadership within ABA Across Environments has increased inter-employee engagement with supervisors and administrators and promoted tenure, professional growth, and personal development.  At times, during the onset of the employment relationship, exploring values and setting a precedent that personal values matter can be difficult.  Helping new employees navigate their own values and having open and honest dialogue regarding their needs and the employer’s expectations can be uncomfortable.  There is a learning curve to discovering values, and that can sometimes lead to a decision to move away from employment within the current organization.  Without a position available that meets those values, the typical solution is to not continue employment but to mutually respect that the relationship is not value-based.  In the experience of ABA Across Environments, those former employees are often the greatest advocates and sources of referrals.  Instead of terminating an employee from a place of dissatisfaction, the professional relationship can continue outside of the organization.

Some aspects of values-based leadership might not be generalizable to large corporations with more than a few hundred employees.  Managing a large-scale operation with many levels, as well as possible outside investors, can potentially deteriorate the company’s core values.  Although not impossible, it would be incredibly difficult and challenging to retrofit a profit-driven-company to meet a values-based-standard.

From a behavior analytical standpoint, this approach appears to prevent some burnout across employees.  Employees at ABA Across Environments report feeling appreciated, comfortable caring for themselves and family, confident in reaching out for help or assistance, and a desire to remain with the company.  From the company’s perspective, implementing these strategies reduced turnover from at least four per year to zero in 2022 and only one in 2021.  ABA Across Environments demonstrates that values-based leadership helps to establish a strong motivational operation thereby increasing desired behaviors such as tenure and professional development while decreasing unwanted behaviors such as reprimands and employee termination. Although determining the company’s core values and the necessary actions to achieve them can appear unachievable, the overarching implications of creating a culture that values its employees and fosters their growth with support and compassion is inestimable.
